2018 SCTC Year Book
12/08/2017

Hello to all SCTC members,

I am already planning your 2018 Year Book and once again looking for stories, poems, articles and pictures etc. The publication is for all members as well as those who show and we love to hear about the interesting and funny things your cairns get up to. Last year we heard about the Cairntastic obreedience team and their preparation for Crufts, we have had Jimmy’s amusing adventures and a cairn who appeared in a stage production of The Wizard of OZ. Maybe your cairn does agility or visits the sick, goes on charity walks etc. The latest deadline for inclusion in the 2018 Year Book is Saturday 9th December 2017.

SOUTHERN CAIRN TERRIER CLUB OPEN SHOW SATURDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER
10/10/2016

Best In Show: Mears' Glenmear McIntyre. Reserve Best In Show: Yates & Johnson's Nordcairn's Quiero Mucho Of Pendley.
Best Puppy In Show: Farwell's Svendalens Starry Knight.
Best Bitch: Osborn's Tweslam Gimme Gimme Magic.
Reserve Best Bitch And Veteran Bitch: Osborn's Ch. Tweslam Maid By Magic.

My thanks to the Southern Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge my first breed Open Show. Thank you to the exhibitors that came to support me and the club and my very professional stewards. I know how hard it is to run a show with an atmosphere and this club did not disappoint even with the amount of absentee's. I am sure that "I" and the weather caused a "little" trial for the Show Manager and committee, I agree that outside is best but the dogs all coped with the inside ring on rubber mats really well.

My top honour Cairns could easily change places on another day. In my opinion they were all true to the breed type. I love good neck and shoulders and with this everything else fits in. I also like "full" harsh coats and at this time of year they should be at their best ready for the winter in the wild (not that many of ours live outdoors).

Class 1 - Minor Puppy Dog (No Entries)

Class 2 - Puppy Dog (1 Entry)
1st - Farwell's Svendalens Starry Knight - Cream, up to size, masculine head, correct dentition, good rear angulation, hard to assess topline on the move as he was giving his handler a hard time in this class.

Class 3 - Junior Dog (4 Entries - 1 Absent)
1st - Yates & Johnson's Nordcairns Quiero Mucho Of Pendley (Imp Dnk) - Lovely red with attractive head, good stop and neat ears, lovely reach of neck and clean shoulders, pleased to find a good forechest, moved with drive, shown and presented to perfection. R.B.I.S.
2nd - Shopland's Trekhilli Mr Bean At Cherrycrack - Another lovely up and coming male. Good head with attractive eyes, good stop and correct balance, just needs to tighten in front to complete the full picture
3rd - Peers' Tweedisle Tugman.

Class 4 - Novice Dog (No Entries)

Class 5 - Post Graduate Dog (3 Entries)
1st - Mears' Glenmear McIntyre - This boy took my eye and did not disappoint, lovely to go over, strong head with lovely appealing expression, good length of neck and sound topline, powered from his strong quarters, presented in a full coat which is unusual at present. B.D & B.I.S.
2nd - Peers' Performing The Dream For Tweedisle - Smaller than 1 and another day would have changed his place. Pleasing head with good eye colour, level topline and tail carried correctly, moved well.
3rd - Kippen's Carradine Dee Jay Of Chezaku.

Class 6 - Minor Limit Dog (1 Entry - 1 Absent)

Class 7 - Open Dog (5 Entries - 2 Absent)
1st - Thompson's Castleline Barn Dance - Attractive head for a male, full dentition, a good stop, a good balanced body and side movement was pleasing. A little lethargic today but he is still a junior so has time on his side.
2nd - Bateman & Gompels' Carradine Terries Tipple - I have met this dog before and his head is his fortune, good wide jaw with a good bite, strong ribcage and kept his topline on the move, coarse coat - would of liked a little more of it. No mistaking that he is a male.
3rd - Burman's Anjofra Gorky Park.

Class 8 - Special Beginners Dog (1 Entry)
1st - Morley's Kedvaiy Locamotion - Good head with correct stop, topline OK on the move, good coarse coat, correct tailset, carrying a little extra weight which affected his front movement.

Class 9 - Special Veteran Dog or Bitch (7 - 9 Years Inclusive) - (7 Entries - 3 Absent)
They Are All A Credit To Their Owners.
1st - Bateman & Sach's Dandi Boy Spud - Strong Masculine Head, lovely strong jaw and nice large teeth beautifully clean. He Has Kept His Topline and Drive, Showed Really Well.
2nd - Osborn's Ch. Tweslam Maid By Magic - A quality bitch with a pretty head, good topline and her weight is spot on which reflects in her movement. she knows that she is lovely!! R.B.B
3rd - Morley's Kedvaiy Locamotion.

Class 10 - Special Veteran Dog or Bitch (10 years and Over) - (1 Entry -1 Absent)

Class 11 - Minor Puppy Bitch (2 Entries - 2 Absent)

Class 12 - Puppy Bitch (1 Entries - 1 Absent)

Class 13 - Junior Bitch (2 Entries - 1 Absent)
1st - Thompson's Castleline Caledonian Lass - Really pretty head, clean shoulders, level topline, when settled moved well.

Class 14 - Novice Bitch (2 Entries - 2 Absent)

Class 15 - Post Graduate Bitch (5 Entries - 3 Absent)
1st - Osborn's Tweslam Gimme Gimme Magic - Very attractive light red bitch, pretty feminine head, with lovely neat ears, one of the best neck and shoulders of the day. Full correct textured coat, true movement and glided around the ring, at one with the handler. B.B.
2nd - Morley's Cannwood Here's Hetty - Very showy grey brindle, pleasing head with neat ears, good outline, a little short of coat today Movement was OK

Class 16 - Minor Limit Bitch (4 Entries - 2 Absent)
1st - Osborn's Tweslam Born To Bewitch - Same mother as 1st in the last class and she has certainly stamped her mark. Pretty head and a lovely shape and outline, true movement coming and going, again from this kennel shown in correct full coat.
2nd - Kippen's Chezaku Moonlight Symphony - Smaller in size and outline to 1st, head furnishings a little sparse, correct eye colour and good dentition. Carrying a little too much weight which affected her front and rear movement, showed well.
Class 17 - Open Bitch (4 Entries, 3 Absent)
Really sad for Open Bitch class to have so many absentee's.
1st - Peers' Tweedisle Paper Moon - This young lady made full use of being the only one in this class and really showed her little socks off. I liked her size and balance, lovely dark harsh full coat, good topline on the move, not quite as true on the table.

Class: 18 - Special Beginners Bitch (2 Entries, 1 Absent)
1st - Morley's Cannwood Here's Hetty - 2nd in Post Graduate Bitch.
Lynda Hughes

The family realise that the journey to Eastbourne may be too far for some and ask that Carol be remembered instead by "walking your dogs in memory of mum if possible in their red shoes."

Sad News To Report - Ursula Taylor
07/01/2015

Sad news reached me today that Ursula Taylor died on 7th November and I have been advised that her funeral was held just before Christmas.

Ursula showed her Kilticlan Cairns during the 80's & 90's when she was living in Liphook. In the late 90's she moved to Hunstanton and although was not able to get to many shows she would always support the club show and enjoyed reading a marked up catalogue. She regularly took Dog World to keep abreast with Cairn News.

She was voted an Honorary SCTC Life Member at the 2013 AGM.

A lovely lady who will be missed by all who knew her.

Our condolences go to her family.

SCTC Autumn Show Critique
07/11/2014

Thank you to the Committee of the Southern Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their Centenary Open Show. It was a real honor, and I will treasure my wonderful gift . it.s very me! I would also like to that all of the exhibitors for their entries.

It was a shame the weather was not on our side meaning the show had to take place in doors. A lot of patience was shown by exhibitors and their dogs - thank you. The smell of wet cairns added to the atmosphere of the day!

I was delighted to find exhibits being shown with correct bites and clean teeth, my main concern are the number of dogs carrying a little bit too much weight. They seemed to like their treats! It.s a shame as movement is impacted if a dog is on the heavy side. Temperaments were excellent which was a pleasure to see in the ring.

My thanks also go to my stewards who assisted in making the day run smoothly.

Centenary Weekend - Report from our Roving Reporter
13/05/2014

SCTC Centenary Celebrations

SCTC Championship Show

The SCTC would like to thank all of you who managed to attend our 100 year Celebrations over last weekend and for those of you who could not make it I will try and describe some of the Highlights.

As it was such a special occasion we did not want to spoil it for lack of space, so after touring around several venues we felt Bracknell Leisure Centre was the most suitable with its proximity to the motorways and especially having a Hotel so near for those of you who stayed overnight,to enter both Shows.

The Kennel Club were kind enough to grant us back/back Championship Shows which made it a worthwhile weekend for those who entered.

We would like to say a special thank you to those of you who made donations toward our Centenary fund which without, we could not have afforded the special little touches. Secondly thank you to our overseas visitors who made the effort to attend, some of whom travelled thousands of miles to join in the Celebrations.

Two years ago when we first started planning the weekend, the Committee decided as well as the Shows it would be nice to have a party atmosphere and I hope you will agree we managed that to some extent. Lunch was bookable for 100 pennies and was provided by the Club in the form of a buffet followed by yummy cakes and I think everyone left the room full. Tea, not so hot but what the heck nobody’s perfect.

On arrival to the show, entrants were greeted by two of our senior Committee members Feffie Somerfield and Mary Towers, where they were given their show envelopes containing the silver schedules and a boxed spoon bearing the Club Logo as a memento of the weekend.

The show started off with a minutes silence in remembrance of Janet Ough from Cornwall who sadly passed away on Thursday.

Our Judges were Mr Jim Pollock for Dogs and Mrs Chris Roberts for Bitches and referee Miss Jean Hudson.

On a lighter note before the afternoons Judging began the lovely cake which was donated by Susan Weinberger and made by Chris Grainger was cut and everyone had a piece with a glass or two of sparkling (non- alcoholic) wine, sorry for those of you who were expecting the real stuff but we did not want anyone losing their driving licence through us.

We were allowed use of the Hospitality Suite, where when not showing, all exhibitors could enjoy refreshments all day courtesy of the Club with an overhead view of the ring. I would at this point like to thank my sister in law who was seconded at the last minute to help when our original plans fell by the wayside. Thanks Val you have a job for life.

Francis Goldfinch did a wonderful job on the silent Auction and thanks to all who donated items to be Auctioned. These items can be seen on the Show pictures on Midland Cairn site. I don’t know if Alan has a new camera but the pictures are of a wonderful quality and apart from the double chin he even made me look good.

Both the Judges Jim Pollock and Chris Roberts were ably assisted by our Stewards of the day Sharon Confue (of the silly heels) and Jenny Fairweather (of sensible shoes ) and their silver box containing our Special Centenary Rosettes.

Our club stand, which was over flowing with knitted Cairns supplied by Val Carter who for the past two years has been supplying us with items to sell towards the Centenary Fund and must surely by now be able to knit them in her sleep was as usual manned by Marilyn and on this occasion husband John ( Hope you had a lovely Birthday John).

Thanks to all who gave Raffle Prizes and to Susan and Mandy for selling the tickets - I think that must be a record for sale of tickets. The table was in danger of collapsing under the weight of the prizes, although the top 5 prizes which were not little brown envelopes but little silver envelopes containing cash weighed very little – 1st Prize £150, 2nd Prize £100, 3rd Prize £50, Res Prize £40 and VHC Prize £25, but were happily won by Nick Halford, Maxine Bennett, Brenda Shannon, Rosemary Harrison and Alma Smee.

We had a number of welcome visitors throughout the day. Only being in showing 10 years I did not recognise some of them but the way they were welcomed it was obvious they were long time members. Mrs Babs Clark and husband called in and bought more items for our club stand and Mr. Jeffery Frost spent the day with us.

After the show there was just time for most people to relax for ½ hour before it was time to get ready for the evenings Event - The Centenary Dinner. I gather those of you who attended will have realized by now our theme colours were Blue and Silver which was carried through to the table decorations.

The dinner started with a Sparkling Wine reception (pretend it was Champagne) then the fun began trying to find where we were sitting. All the tables were given local place names and on each table we tried to have a Committee Member. Thanks to the patience of Maxine everyone had a little favour bag with more mementos
of the day. Margolia was obviously taken with these as they appeared the next day on her facebook page.

A few words were said by Pat Carlton Smith our President, who then asked Brian Mears to say grace which was followed by a leisurely dinner where much wine was imbibed and the hilarity increased by the minute. We then enjoyed a lighthearted speech from our guest speaker Mr. Steve Dean after which Mary Towers was called upon to thank him and a bouquet of thanks was presented to Sue Kinton in appreciation of all her hard work. After this once again Mr Jim Pollock’s services were called upon to Auction two Marjory Cox pictures kindly donated these were won by Steve Dean and Alma Smee. This was followed by a small raffle for a little Cairn in his dinner suit which was won by Chris Roberts.

This was followed by yet more wine and hilarity. Apologies for the noise from the Ascot table.

So to bed so we can do it all again tomorrow !

Joint CTC Championship Show

Once again Sunday found Feffie and Mary ensconced by the entrance handing out Show envelopes together with distributing the donated gifts from Royal Canin. The ring again looked very smart with its 4 Bay trees at each corner.

Today our Judge was Mrs Ann Waugh who was once again assisted by Steward Sharon Confue (without the heels) and this time Katy Nesbitt.

In addition to the Southern Club stand several other Clubs – CTC and the SW&Wof E CTC had taken us up on our offer to have their Club stand as this was the Joint Show, so there was more to see and buy.

Anne and David Kippen had quite an easy day today as the Cups for the Joint Show are not so many as they had to deal with in yesterdays show.

I think last nights frivolities had caught up with some of us as it seemed quieter than yesterday although there were nearly as many people including some more visitors dropping in.

Lunch consisted of Jacket potato followed by yet more of those dreadful cakes. I must have my scales checked. Again refreshments were served all day in the Hospitality Suite.

To close we would like to thank Terry & Gina, Robin & Victoria and Bob & Ann who either came early to help set up or stayed late to clear away without you we could not do it. Lastly thanks Ann for looking after my girl while I was here, there and everywhere.

Southern Cairn Terrier Club Open Show at the Jubilee Hall, Lewknor, Oxon on 5th October 2013 - Judge: Helen Pearson

I should like to thank the Officers and Committee of the Southern Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their Autumn Open Show – a lovely show with a friendly atmosphere. I sincerely appreciated their warm welcome and super hospitality throughout the day. I should also like to thank my stewards for all their hard work. I also thank the exhibitors for their fantastic entry – both in quantity and quality. I was delighted with both my line ups, and some decisions were close. All the Cairns had super temperaments, and it was a pleasure to judge each one of them.

SCTC - Roving Reporters Open Show Report

S.C.T.C AUTUMN OPEN SHOW 2013

We were all rather concerned when we had to move our Autumn show from it’s usual September slot to accommodate Driffield after they moved from October, as to what the weather would be like. Lewknor is a lovely venue as long as the show can be held outside, it’s a little cramped if we have to retire to the hall.

Anyhow, we need not have worried as the Gods were once again with us and the sun shone all day, in fact it was warmer than most years. I’m sure the warm weather was a factor in putting everyone in a good mood and it did indeed have a happy atmosphere as several people commented.

Our Judge Helen Pearson brightened up the ring in her lovely red jacket and was capably assisted by her two Stewards, Sharon and Jennie - thanks girls it all went smoothly and you even left a couple of mint imperials!

You will all have by now seen the show results and I’m pleased to Congratulate Chris Grianger and the “Devil“ for getting BIS. He may be a veteran but he still knows how to strut his stuff and show the youngsters how its done – Well done both of you.

This is just a newsletter, so I shall not go into places but I will say it was good to see Jacquie Poile back in the ring after too long an absence. It was also nice to see some new faces and I hope it will not be the last time they come showing as they all seemed to do very well and went home with the first of hopefully many more rosettes to come. I remember our first time out with Holly who went home with a handful of rosettes (as I was too daft to know not to enter everything) but we were hooked.

We were pleased to welcome our ex Committee member Sonia back who quickly took up her old position handing out the envelopes. It is lovely that although she is no longer on the Committee she still continues to help us when she can. Anyone wishing to help please feel free to offer your services and be assured they will not be turned down especially as we are coming up to our Centenary Celebrations, all help gratefully received.

I would like at this point on behalf of all the Committee to say a special thanks to Val Carter who has been knitting like a demon to make all the super Cairn items which can be purchased from our Club stand, I’m sure you will all have seen them . Val is kindly doing this to help raise funds for the Centenary. I don’t care what they said I think Alma looked very stylish in her scarf.

Once again we have to thank our Caterers, Hazel and Co for filling every one up with bacon rolls, coffee and cake etc. never a disappointment except when you get on the scales the next day.

Ann and David had the Cups looking bright and we would like to thank them both for once again donating pressies for the “olduns” much appreciated especially by Molly.

Finally we would like to thank all of you who helped either by setting up or helping clear away after the show and a special thanks to our Show Manager Ian who makes it all look so easy – still after Windsor it must be.

That’s it for this year folks so have a good Christmas and next time I rove it will be at our Centenary Weekend – hope to see you all there.

SOUTHERN CAIRN TERRIER CLUB - Open show Saturday 4th May 2013
27/06/2013

I would like to thank the Southern Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their open show. The weather, although dry, was very testing to say the least with extremely strong winds, especially in the morning, and this did effect my ability to use the full ring to its best advantage for the dog classes although it did improve after lunch. I would like to say a special thank you to my two ring stewards, Sharon Confue and Jennie Fairweather for their help and support, it was a mammoth task to stop everything that was not nailed down from blowing away!

I was delighted at such a large entry and thoroughly enjoyed my day but I was surprised to find a number of level bites and an even larger number of dirty teeth. I do feel presentation is extremely important and this includes clean coats and teeth.

Minor Puppy Dog 2 Entries
1st Goldfinch’s Franfhaleal Itsallovernow At Kanawha Full coated red, very much a baby at the moment. Good head, correct mouth, level top line, correct front movement but a little close at the back at the moment

S.C.T.C Watlington Open Show – Judge Joan Percy

Saturday 4th May was the S.C.T.C Spring Open Show held at the pleasant venue of wild and windy Watlington Village Hall.

We awoke earlier than we usually do for a Saturday to heavy rain but by the time we were ready to leave it had stopped and the sun was shining. It was however short lived and as we went up the M40 we again encountered heavy rain luckily it was of the drive through type.

We pulled into Watlington to find Colin Brown had been there before us and the lamp posts were adorned with Show signs, they are very early birds around that area.

As it wasn’t raining we took the decision to set up outside and the best we can say is the rain held off, but it was cold and windy all day with the sun taunting occasionally.

Prior to the show we had our AGM where those members who attended were updated on the Club Accounts and bought up to date with the preparations for our Centenary show next year. Pat thanked all those members who although not on the Committee always turned up early and stayed late to clear up, without your help we struggle. The meeting ended on time and the show started promptly.

Joan Percy is made of sterner stuff than us Southerners and battled on without putting on her overcoat, she must have been frozen as the wind was horrific. Most of the day was spent picking up papers and rescuing chairs. Hopefully none of the dogs were too upset by it. A particularly strong gust blew a couple of chairs across the ring when my Veteran Molly was on the table and the look she gave me said it all.

We held out and the show ended to the sound of Church bells not for us but for the couple getting married next door.

The Red Kites thoroughly enjoyed themselves swooping overhead. A sign of the long winter the trees that they normally sit and watch the show in were only just showing signs of bud so no where for them to hide.

Lets hope it is warmer at the Autumn Open show in Lewknor on 5th October

Obituary - Fiona Cameron
11/02/2013

Cairn Terrier breeders and exhibitors everywhere will have been saddened to hear that on January 17 Fiona Cameron lost her battle with cancer.

We have all urged her on through this battle, but Jim, her devoted husband, who was at her bedside at the Ninewell Hospital, Dundee, for the last 32 hours, put it so well when he said: “Fiona fought for life the same way she fought her cancer – with immense courage and determination.”

For many years now Fiona has dedicated much of her life to the Cairn Terrier. She was invaluable to the Cairn Terrier Club, becoming a committee member in 1995, editing the Year Book for 14 years, including the wonderful Centenary edition. She was breed representative on the Scottish Breeds committee, secretary to the UK CTC Working Party, secretary to the UK Cairn Symposium and to the World Cairn Symposium to be held this year.

It was through the last three that I came to know and admire her so much.

Today it is fashionable to refer to one`s mentors, and, apart from Sally Latto who I shall refer to later, the people she came the closest to were Ron and Brenda Birch. I had learnt a great deal about how to conduct myself at Cairn Terrier meetings and shows from Ron and Brenda, so we saw things similarly. Many a time one of us has said:”What would Ron have thought or advised”. From that thought we have devised what we hoped would be a suitable plan of action. Ron knew all the Kennel Club rules and schemes and, following in his footsteps, Fiona knew just where to look for the answers.

Fiona always did her best to keep me on the straight and narrow, helping me word various letters appropriately, reminding me of things I should be doing, or writing, and checking my efforts for the wording, accuracy and grammar. Nothing ever escaped her eagle eye, but any criticism or correction was always suggested in such a kindly and helpful way.

Sybil Berrecloth reminds me that Fiona`s secretarial skills were very much a part of her life as she helped her husband run his PR business and also taught at a further education college in Alloa.
She kept various Cairn records up to date, including the judging lists, which was a great help to clubs at Year Book time.

Sally Latto helped Fiona get started seriously in the show-ring, and she won her first CC in 1992 at Scottish Breeds with Pinetop Rose of Stryveling under Phyl Hayward. Her first champion also came from Sally. This was Pinetop Havana of Stryveling made up in 1995.
Her first home-bred champion was Stryveling Ivanhoe made up in 2002. His breeding was basically a mixture of Sally`s Pinetops and Ron and Brenda Birch`s Kinkims. Ivanhoe`s son, Stryveling Robb Ruadh, ex Stryveling The Lady Rowena (a daughter of Havana) became a champion in 2009. Last year she made up Stryveling Sweet Caroline, who was by Ch Birselaw Billy Fury ex Pinetop Game Set `N` Match for Stryveling. Her litter brother was also on the way to his title, and it was always a delight to see her pleasure at their various wins.
Fiona first awarded CCs at Bournemouth in 2006 and lastly at the LKA in 2011. She had been invited to judge in Australia in 2011 but sadly had to withdraw on health grounds. She judged as she lived life – with integrity, knowledge and careful consideration.

Fiona was just short of 70 when she died and she and Jim had been married for nearly 40 years. He said to me “I shall miss her more than I can say”. I am sure he will and all our thoughts go out to him at this saddest of times.

We are all going to miss her in so many different ways. Frances Goldfinch, who has worked closely with her over the last two years, said: “I shall miss Fiona so much, her wisdom, sense of humour even in times of duress. We worked well together and I feel that my right arm has been cut off”.

Fiona also dedicated 7 years of her life to rescuing Cairn Terriers when she became a Trustee for the Cairn Terrier Relief Fund from 24th April 1993 to April 2000, even when she retired in 2000 she was still prepared to help out her favourite breed.

Fiona Cameron was indeed the breed`s best friend.

She was taken into Ninewells Hospital in Dundee on Wednesday. Her husband Jim was at her side and said that she fought for life the same way she fought her cancer – with immense courage and determination.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Jim at this very sad time. Fiona will leave a big hole in our Cairn world. Fiona will be sadly missed by us all.

CTRF Annual Report for 2012
14/01/2013

CAIRN TERRIER RELIEF FUND
R.C.No. 803599
PATRON: Paul O’Grady
PRESIDENT: Mrs Mary Towers

Time certainly doesn’t wait for no man and definitely not for a woman that’s for sure!! Where does the time go? Club editors have been asking me for weeks now for the CTRF report and it’s now the middle of January and only just being written. It’s always something that I put off doing until the last minute, but time has now run out!!

2012 has seen the launch of the new CTRF website, built and managed by Alison Hargreaves, who is one of the many people who are now members of the ‘Friends’ of the CTRF and willing to give up their time and expertise to help out whenever and wherever they can.
The eBay listing was launched in November 2011 and it has really taken off with Maggie Machin at the helm, she has been given the accolade of ‘Top Rated Seller Status’ by eBay.

We have had lots of items donated to the CTRF throughout the year from hand knitted dog coats and dog walking gloves to collectable Cairn memorabilia and items from the CTRF stall that you see me selling at the Cairn Club shows. These items are not only being sold to people in this country, but all over the world including Australia, New Zealand, America, France, Sweden and lots more, so why not try it yourself………………………… www.ebay.co.uk/sch/cairntrescue-2008

Selling donated items this way has proved to be quite a money spinner and this money is used mainly to help pay veterinary expenses for the Cairns we rescue.

Jane Metcalf-Sault our membership Secretary for the Friends of the CTRF has also been busy this year, as the interest in eBay has had a ‘knock on effect’ with not only increasing the visitors to our website, but also people wanting to join the Friends of the CTRF. The membership to the Friends stands at approx. 600, but it is growing each month and keeps Jane very busy!!

Talking about being busy, the 3 to 4 weeks run up to Christmas was very busy as 10 Cairns came into rescue one after the other and there didn’t seem to be any let up. This is the most we have had in such a short space of time. Their ages ranged from 11 weeks to 11 years and all of them were re-homed before Christmas with the exception of the 11 year old as he needed a short course in ‘social behaviour’ and the second with the same problem who went to a ‘foster home’. Both of these ‘wayward’ boys have been placed in their new homes and are settling in well.

Throughout the year 62 Cairns were ‘adopted’, however a further 8 were put to sleep due to poor temperaments. We still post out forms to people who are looking to re-home a Cairn, but a lot of our success stories can be accredited to our website. Whenever we have a Cairn to re-home and no one waiting who is suitable to take on a particular dog then we include its details and photograph on the ‘rescue page’ of the CTRF website and it’s amazing how much interest there is from the general public.

We also try to help other dog rescues if they have any Cairns that have been handed in or found straying. We include their website link on our website rescue page and usually a home is found for them within a few days.

There is a downside on using the internet as every other week a Cairn ‘free to good home’ can be found on Gumtree, Epups, Pre Loved etc. One day last week I looked on Gumtree and found 34 advertisements for Cairn Terriers one was free to a good home and when I enquired about it a home had been found for it, I just hope that it’s a good home and they won’t just sell the dog on. There was also an 11 week old puppy advertised by a K.C. Approved Breeder???? Another advert stated “Would you like hours of entertainment, then buy one of these pups”.

You can’t tell me that people who can sell their dogs this way are reputable breeders and truthfully care for their dogs. This year we have re-homed two 11 week old Cairn puppies and both of them were sold via the internet…..I think this says it all about internet selling!!!

With thanks to the CTRF team of Trustee’s for their help and support throughout the year, also grateful thanks to our volunteer helpers and fosterers, who turn out with very little notice to fetch and carry dogs from A to B or to ‘foster’ a dog in their own home rather than it going into kennels. Our job would be much more difficult without their help.

Thanks also to the eagle eyed members who trawl the websites looking for dogs that need our help, two such Cairns have been saved from ‘death row’ this week, because their plight had been spotted by one of them.

To all Club members a very big thank you for your support throughout the year it is very much appreciated.

With best wishes

Chris Roberts
CTRF Secretary

SCTC Christmas Cairn Fayre - December 2012
11/12/2012

On Saturday 8th December we held our Annual Fun day in the form of a Christmas Fayre

As organiser I would like to thank all those who gave up their time and put in so much hard work to make it such a jolly occasion.

Despite being advertised all year by various means we unfortunately never had as many visitors as we would have liked, which was a shame, as those who made the effort and came thoroughly enjoyed participating in the games and Fancy dress which were ably judged by Mr Paul Brown and his silly hat. Every entrant went home with prizes which Paul supplied and rosettes.

Wendy Laker gave an exhibition of Cairn obedience and put paid to the old saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks when in about 3 minutes she had Carol Woodwards 12½ year old Bertie “sitting” and “Staying”.

Jenny Fairweather and friends entranced everyone with their heel to music routines and Jenny kindly donated a piece of her lovely handmade Jewellery to our Raffle.

I would especially like to thank Gina and Terry Morley who as usual were first to offer their help and organised Musical Mat games for the dogs and donated Doggy Chrismas Stockings and Goody Bags which she had made.

Chris Roberts bought the CTRF stand and with the Club Stand, book stall & Giant Tombola there was plenty to spend your money on.

All profits made from the day will go towards our Centenary Celebrations in 2014.

News Release: Kennel Club Concern About Slug Pellets
18/07/2012

KENNEL CLUB CONCERN ABOUT SLUG PELLETS

As we are set for the wettest summer on record, the Kennel Club has issued a reminder to dog owners about the danger posed to dogs by the use of slug pellets.

Nick Sutton, Kennel Club Health Information Officer and former veterinary toxicologist said: “Around this time of year, we regularly see a spike in cases of dogs and cats with slug pellet poisoning. Since it has been so wet recently, there are likely to be more slugs and snails around, meaning that people are more likely to use slug and snail pellets, which in turn increase the chances of dogs coming into contact with them. The substances used in these pesticides can be toxic to mammals and they can cause severe illness and sometimes even fatalities.”

Pesticides are formulated to be toxic and a consequence of this is that they may affect animals other than their target species. Metaldehyde-based slug pellets are very dangerous to pets - even small amounts of pellets can cause significant poisoning, and severe signs can develop within an hour of consumption.

Nick recommends that if a pet is suspected of ingesting slug pellets, owners should seek immediate veterinary attention: “Even small amounts of metaldehyde can cause a sudden onset of effects, such as twitching and fitting and so rapid intervention can save an animal’s life. Intensive therapy may be required, involving heavy sedation, control of convulsions and associated life support measures if needed.

“If you do suspect your dog or cat has eaten slug pellets, then try to remember to take the packet it came in along with you to your veterinary practice, so that they know which pesticide they are dealing with. Accidents do happen, but try to minimise this by always reading and following the instructions for any pesticide.”

KENNEL CLUB WARNING
25/06/2012

KENNEL CLUB WARNS PEOPLE NOT TO COOK THEIR DOGS

With today’s welcome sunshine, and summer fast approaching, the Kennel Club is warning people that they risk cooking their dogs alive if they leave them unattended in a car.

Dogs are extremely sensitive to the heat and should never be left in a car alone, even on a fairly warm or cloudy day. Surprisingly, leaving a car window open or supplying water makes little difference and the dog will suffer, as a car can quickly heat up to around 50°C.

Each year the Kennel Club receives reports of dogs being left in cars, and many incidents where dogs die from heatstroke as a result. The Kennel Club is calling for urgent action to prevent irresponsible dog ownership this summer.

To promote the seriousness of the issue the Kennel Club has produced a three minute video called ‘Don’t Cook your Dog’, which is supported by Dogs Today magazine’s Don’t Cook Your Dog campaign. The video is available through Youtube from today (25th June) and demonstrates how easily dogs can suffer from brain damage, organ failure and death, if left in a hot car.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said: “We might not be experiencing a scorching summer but today’s sunshine reminds us that even on fairly warm and cloudy days cars can heat up at an alarming speed that can be fatal to dogs. Every year dogs die traumatic deaths after being left in cars so we urge people to take care when out about with their dogs. Whether in the sun or the shade, cars heat up quickly and it can be unbearable even for us before the air-conditioning comes into effect, never mind for dogs.

“Dogs can only cool down by panting and sweating through their paws, so they will find the heat far worse than humans. Owners must realise that dogs cannot handle heat like we can and that it is never safe to leave the dog in the car alone, whether the windows are open or not.”

The Kennel Club has issued the following advice regarding travelling with your dog during warm weather.

ALWAYS
• Consider the weather and your journey in advance, especially if you don’t have air conditioning in your car. Think about whether the journey is absolutely necessary for your dog.

• Plan your journey and check out the Kennel Club’s Open for Dogs site and use the Dog Friendly app to find places that will allow dogs in with you

• Make sure your dog has plenty of space in the car and isn’t squashed or forced to sit in direct sunlight.

• Always make sure there is shade provided: even in an air conditioned car a dog can become too hot if in full sun.

• Make sure plenty of stops are taken with lots of water available to drink.

• Take cold water in a thermos rather than a plastic bottle so it stays cold rather than being lukewarm. Ice cubes are helpful in a thermos for cooling too.

NEVER
• Leave a dog unattended in a car, even with the window open and water available. Take them out of the car and leave them in a secure, cool place with access to shade and water or take them with you, there are plenty of places that are part of the Kennel Club’s Open for Dogs scheme and will allow dogs in.

• Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion in hot weather, or stand in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time.

• Pass by a dog if you see one suffering in a car. Whether it be in a supermarket car park or at a show, make sure you let someone in authority know and if in doubt call the police or the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

To help avoid the need to leave dogs unattended in cars, the Kennel Club ‘Open for Dogs’ campaign encourages more businesses and services to welcome dogs. Thousands of dog-friendly attractions are listed on the website www.openfordogs.org.uk, making it the ideal way to plan for trips for the whole family including your dog over the forthcoming holiday season. SCTC Spring Open Show
17/05/2012

S.C.T.C Open Show Watlington May 5th - Judge Mr Reinier Goud

Well some of us must have been good as our prayers were answered and the rain stayed away. It was not as warm as it has been other years but at least it was dry.

Reinier had a very good entry of 70 dogs, and on behalf of Reinier and the Committee I would like to thank all those who entered for making it such a nice day. Even the Red Kites seemed to enjoy it as they continuously circled over head. I am assured they were not looking for lunch but they certainly seemed very interested us.

Talking of lunch Hazel and Co once again came up trumps and as it was Dutch Liberation Day the Judges dinner table was duly decorated in the most awful orange tablecloth and matching napkins. I trust it did not put him off his food too much. He’s lucky I could not find a duvet cover the same colour or he would have slept in orange.

I have not spoken to Reinier since we dropped him at the airport but Margolia says he told her he had a very nice time.

Our AGM went smoothly with a request for anyone who could become our Year book Editor as the post has now become vacant, and the show started more or less on time. Owing to the large entry we finished a little later than usual and a big thanks to our all the Stewards who kept things moving or we might have still been there at twilight. An extra thanks to all of you who once again helped with the setting up and clearing away.

Presentations were was made to Wendy and Sonya for all their hard work over past years and although they have both had to give up their Committee positions have both said they would continue to support the S.C.T.C. and Sonya has kindly agreed to continue to be our Puppy Liaison Officer.

Gill was on her usual site with the Raffle and her plant stall and I’m sure if she never sold you tickets then Pat did when she did the rounds. The Club stand looked very pretty with all the new stock. Anne and David again did a splendid job with the Cups and I sometimes saw Anne covering the Club Stand, my apologies for not being much help at the show but I did do my bit behind the scenes as landlady and chauffeur to the Judge.

I think I have covered everything and look forward to seeing you all again for the Autumn Show at Lewknor under Louise Peers and lets hope its warmer.

S.C.T.C. CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 24th February 2012

Well another year of showing has begun with our Championship show judged by Mrs Alma Smee being the first on the Club show circuit.

As a result of the members ballot this year the show was changed back to February and there was some concern about inclement weather, however when the day dawned it was like the middle of Spring .

A minutes silence was held in memory of two of our Members whom we lost over the Christmas period, Mrs Judy Parker Tucker and Mrs Liz Thompson who finally lost her battle with cancer. Both will be sadly missed.

Anne and David Kippen have taken over as Cup Stewards and did a wonderful job of showing the Cups to their best advantage, they looked lovely shining in the sunlight.

Owing to the ill health of one of our Ring Stewards the Committee would like to thank Mrs. Francis Goldfinch for her hard work when she held the fort on her own for the first part of the show, also grateful thanks to Chris Hewitt who stepped in and helped after lunch.

Talking of lunch, as usual a sterling job was done by Hazel and Co who kept us supplied with Tea and Coffee all day together with the delightful smelling bacon rolls, lunch and those wicked cakes.

As well as the usual Raffle, Club stand and Book stall it was a pleasure to welcome Pam ( Steve Thompson's sister) who bought along a selection of the lovely garments knitted by Liz and we hope she had a profitable day as some of the proceeds are going to Steves chosen Cancer Charity in memory of Liz.

Lastly we would like to thank all those who although not Committee members unfailingly give up their time and help with setting up the show and clearing up afterwards. Without these people we would struggle to have such successful shows.

Sorry for the lateness in this newsletter but a minor bug got the better of me for a few days.

KC ANNOUNCEMENT - Exhibitor Crate Identification
16/02/2012

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL DOG SHOW EXHIBITORS

The Kennel Club has announced an important new requirement which will affect exhibitors competing at Crufts next month, and all other dog shows with immediate effect.

The General Committee of the Kennel Club has approved a recommendation which requires exhibitors to display the exhibit/bench number on their crate, cage or container at all times. This is particularly important when cages etc are not on benches, and at unbenched shows.

Each exhibitor is responsible for providing their own crate or cage identification and should note that the original exhibit/bench number card, as provided by the show society, must not be used for this purpose.

This requirement follows a recent meeting of the Show Executive Sub-Committee’s Benching Working Party, where it was agreed that it is important to be able to contact exhibitors and identify dogs where a dog may be in distress or where the crate might be blocking a gangway.

At benched shows soft crates may only be put on benches if they are the appropriate size for both the dog and the bench, and the crate can be securely attached to the bench.

Both of these points have been introduced with the safety of all in mind, but most importantly that of the dog, and to minimise potential incidents and injuries.

Exhibitors should note that the above requirements have been introduced with immediate effect and will therefore apply to exhibitors attending Crufts.

The Kennel Club would also take this opportunity to remind exhibitors that Show Regulation F(1).17 requires that dogs should be present on their benches at all times except when being judged, prepared for exhibition or exercised.

Missing SCTC Cup

Request from Debbie McIntyre.....

Has any one a cup they are not sure what to do with.

The S.C.T.C. have a cup missing

One of our members sent it to CTA in error but they do not recall it.

It is engraved The Lofthouse Cup and would hopefully have a small blue sticky label on the bottom with number 2 written on.

Should anyone have this in safe keeping please contact:

Debbie McIntyre on 01753 543865 or email on damcintyre@hotmail.co.uk

and I will arrange to pick it up.

Many thanks
Debbie

SCTC CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW - Thank you From Debbie McIntyre
04/07/2011

The Committee would like to thank all of you who came to our Championship show on 25th June, especially the Scottish contingency.
We really appreciate your attendance in view of the horrific price of petrol. It’s a shame Yvonne never had a bigger car she could have taken home all the Cups she and Carol won and never had room for. Perhaps she could invest in a trailer ready for next year.

We hope you all liked our new ring mats in the club colour perhaps
a couple of the dogs were not very impressed and left suitable messages advising of the fact. Anyway it’s christened now and smells nice and doggy.

Lunch was served by our very capable caterers Hazel & Co. and looking at the empty plates most people enjoyed it. Cakes looked very yummy too.

Apologies to all those who won our Special Cups and did not have them
awarded in the Ring as usual but it was decided to just hand them out to hurry the proceedings along.

Once again thanks to every body who came and hope to see you all again on 25th February 2012
